Endophytic Verticillium Isolates as a Key to Disease-Suppressive Soilsc
"Verticillium wilt remains a major challenge in agriculture due to the long-term persistence of Verticillium species in soil through microsclerotia. This book chapter reviews the current knowledge on Verticillium-suppressive soils, with a particular focus on beneficial fungal V. isaacii endophytes. The limited number of known suppressive soils are consistently enriched with endophytic Verticillium tricorpus/isaacii-like isolates that can reduce disease pressure probably through competition with pathogenic Verticillium species and/or by stimulating plant defense responses. These endophytes are particularly attractive as biocontrol agents because they can be formulated as long-lasting microsclerotia. Future research should focus on identifying effective crop-specific isolates and distinguishing beneficial strains from those with potential pathogenicity. This work was supported by the Interreg Trans-PathoFlax 2.0 project."
